In Focus Martin Sheen PBS is looking at the ideas that are changing our lives including innovations that are appearing in the construction industry.

As our economy continues to rebound, many Americans are seeing new homes break ground in their communities. Many of these new homes will incorporate features that will make homes more accessible to everyone while also making them more energy efficient.

The Martin Sheen PBS TV show is looking at how universal design in becoming part of the American home. Wider doors, entrances with ramps, accessible kitchen appliances and redesigned bathrooms are making homes friendlier to people with disabilities that confine them to wheelchairs and other mobility devices.

Another issue that is being addressed in the home is energy efficiency. New materials are keeping homes warm in winter and cool in summer. These materials are just the first step though in keeping energy costs down. New appliances are also more efficient and that means people have more money in their pockets to do the things they love.

In Focus Martin Sheen is looking at these advances for public television audiences and online at www.infocusptv.com. The team from In Focus with Martin Sheen is talking to experts at (561) 826-0675 about how these innovations will change the American home in the future starting with the homes that are under construction now as the economy improves.

In Focus Martin Sheen on Hurricane Relief Innovations

Over the last 24 hours, the producers at In Focus Martin Sheen have been monitoring the situation in the Northeast. In the coming days, the cleanup from Hurricane Sandy will begin and thousands of workers will move in to assist in the recovery work.

In Focus PBS has already been examining how innovative ideas in disaster relief are helping areas recover quicker after natural disasters, but Hurricane Sandy poses unique challenges because of the area around the landfall.

The northeastern United States is one of the most populous regions in the country. Large cities in close proximity to the water mean that many of the area’s most important transportation lines are flooded. The difficulty in moving the supplies into place means there is no margin for error in distributing supplies properly.

Relief organizations, cleanup crews, and government officials will have to remain in close contact to make sure that resources are properly placed in the region. The first step will be assessing the damage and determining what type of people and supplies can help the most in different areas. For example, places with significant wind damage might need more crews to move trees and repair power lines,  but areas closer to the water might need more people to manage the flooding and help drain streets and tunnels.

In the coming days, the team at the TV program will be talking to experts to see how the disaster relief operation is moving along. In Focus with Martin Sheen will have reports on the effort both on the TV show and online at www.infocusptv.com.

The team can be reached at (561) 826-0675 for more story ideas from viewers. The series can also be reached through social media like Twitter and Facebook for more information.
